Split shots - images air-mer

29/8/2012

Taking pictures in two different environments is no easy task, given their very different densities. Air at 15 to 20 degrees C has a density of 1.2 kg per cubic metre. Water at the same temperature has a density close to 1000 kg per cubic metre, making it 784 times denser. This makes water absorb light much more than air and creates an imbalance where split shots often have one half well-exposed and the other half either under-exposed (the water) or over-exposed (the air).
The images above were taken at Ile de Sein, a tiny island of 130 inhabitants off the northwesternmost tip of France.
To achieve the right exposure both above and belows the waterline, i used two Inon S2000 strobes at full power, with a narrow (high number) aperture setting to compensate for the relatively slow shutter speed imposed by the use of flash. Using a narrow aperture, more of the image was in focus, both the rock in the foreground about a metre from my lens, and the houses in the background, probably around 100 metres away. On the high-res images I can zoom in and read the sign on the sea wall saying "Quai des Paimpolais".

These two pictures were taken from the same place, with different lens, from behind my neighbour's barn. If you click on the image on the left you should just about be able to see the white windmill on the horizon, towards the right. It is 1800 metres away as the crow flies. The first image was taken with a Panasonic Leica 8mm fisheye. The second a 70-300 Olympus-Zuiko at 300mm. The EPL1 camera used has a crop factor of x2, so it is the equivalent of a 600mm zoom on a full frame sensor camera (or flim camera). The image has also been crop on my computer to enlarge it by around 100%, but at full resolution it is still a sharp image. Jean-Jacques has never had a digital camera and was amazed.

Leap of Faith - Saut de foi

Arthur can't swim yet, but he was happy to jump into the pool with just a noodle, confident he could hold on. I saw the cross motif as he was in mid-air.

Fields of Joy. The house in the background through the 8mm LeicaPanasonic fisheye, and a row of corn with the 45mm macro lens. This corn crop is to feed the cows in the winter.
